Weatherproof, silent Steiner H35 GenII case delivered in 5 months with multi-mount carry, enhanced branding, and matching cost.

‍
Steiner, a manufacturer of precision optics and infrared scopes, needed apurpose-built carry case for the H35 GenII to coincide with the product'smarket launch.

For some over 5years ForwardAP is supplying Steiner Optics with straps and cases for theirvarious binocular lines.

The challenge

‍

‍
Two constraints defined this project. First, speed: design, development, manufacturing, and shipping all had to be completed in under five months tohave stock at Steiner in time for launch — leaving almost no margin foriteration.

Second, a highlyspecific functional requirement: the case had to be silent in use, sinceany rustling or zipper noise risks startling the animals or birds the scope isused to observe. This drove material selection down to the fabric backing.

‍

‍

Requirements
  • Storage for the scope plus small     accessories (lens cloth, USB charger, documentation)
  • Fully weatherproof construction
  • Strict cost targets
  • Minimized shipping volume
  • Multiple mounting/carry options:     four paracord loops (one per corner) for strap or body-harness attachment,     plus a vertical hand strap compatible with belt or MOLLE carry, or     hand-holding
  • More visually present branding     than typical for this product line — elegant and technical, visible from     all sides, without being loud

The solution

‍

Every designdecision on the H35 GenII case traced back to the same brief: keep it silent, keep it flexible to carry, keep it compact, and make the brand felt rather thanshouted.

‍

For silence, thebuild starts at the fabric. A TPU backing was applied to reduce the frictionnoise that ordinary nylon or cordura makes when it flexes or brushes againstgear — a small detail, but decisive in a use case where any sound can flush theanimals or birds the scope is aimed at. That same logic carried through to thefoams, chosen and shaped to cushion the scope without adding rustle, and to thehardware: standard zippers were swapped for silent-pull zippers, so opening andclosing the case in the field doesn't announce the user's position.

Carry flexibilitywas solved through a modular attachment system rather than a single fixedstrap. Four paracord loops, one at each corner, let the case be rigged to achest strap, a body harness, or improvised cordage depending on how theoperator works. A vertical hand strap runs alongside that system, giving threemore carry modes on top: belt attachment, MOLLE mounting, or simple hand-carry.The result is one case body that adapts to very different field setups insteadof forcing users into one style of carry.

‍

Internally, thecase was sized tightly around the scope and its immediate accessories — lenscloth, USB charger, documentation — so it holds everything needed withoutexcess dead space, which also kept shipping volume down against the costtarget.

‍

Branding was themost deliberate trade-off in the design. The brief called for the Steineridentity to be more visually present than on past cases, but without tippinginto anything loud or tactical cliché. The final placement and materialtreatment make the branding legible and present from every side of the case, while staying consistent with the elegant, technical look the product itselfcarries.

‍

Process

‍

‍
To meet the five-month deadline, the case was fully modeled in 3D before anyphysical sampling. This removed room for misinterpretation between designintent and factory execution, and let the team target a single sample roundinstead of the usual multiple iterations — compressing what is normally theslowest phase of development and keeping the project on track for Steiner'slaunch date.

‍

‍

Outcome

‍

‍
Production shipped on time for Steiner's launch. Despite the added complexity(silent materials, multi-mount hardware, more prominent branding), total landedcost — product plus shipping — came in on par with the previous, simpler casethat had minimal branding. The result is a more distinctive product with stronguser feedback on real-world experience.
